Clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of patients with knee conditions treated at the Emergency Department of the Inmaculada Concepción District Hospital of Caaguazú, June–December 2024
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: Knee conditions constitute a reason for clinical care and include both traumatic injuries and degenerative disorders. Local information on their characteristics remains limited. Objective: To describe the sociodemographic, clinical, and diagnostic characteristics of patients with knee conditions treated at the Emergency Department of the Inmaculada Concepción District Hospital in Caaguazú. Materials and Methods: An observational, descriptive, and retrospective study based on the review of 56 medical records corresponding to the period from June to December 2024. Age, sex, place of residence, comorbidities, and diagnoses according to the ICD-10 were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. Results: Of the patients, 51.8% were female, and the mean age was 47.3 ± 18.6 years. The 46–60-year age group accounted for the largest proportion of cases (25.0%). Knee osteoarthritis was the most frequent diagnosis (39.3%), followed by injuries classified under category S83 (28.6%), internal derangements of the knee (17.9%), and disorders of the patella (14.3%). Conclusion: Knee osteoarthritis and joint and ligament injuries grouped under category S83 predominated among the medical records analyzed. The results exclusively describe the patients included in the study and provide preliminary information for future research with broader institutional coverage.
