Abstract
This study sought to describe the status of the most important aspects of oral health and halitosis in patients attending the Periodontology and Operative Dentistry departments at the Universidad Santa Clara de Asís between February and May 2025. A quantitative, observational, cross-sectional study was conducted with a convenience sample of patients. The assessment included a clinical examination to record the oral hygiene index, the presence of tongue coating, and periodontal condition, along with a consultation on halitosis perception, a questionnaire to inquire about oral hygiene habits, and knowledge of the possible causes of bad breath. Ninety-five percent of respondents stated they knew the causes of halitosis; however, 20% were unsure whether oral hygiene was a determining factor. Regarding oral care habits, 55% used only a toothbrush and toothpaste, while only 17% included dental floss. The reported brushing frequency was twice a day in 64% of the cases, three or more times in 33% of the cases, and once a day in 2%. Clinical evaluation revealed a high prevalence of caries (57%), gingivitis (25%), tartar (15%), and periodontitis (11%), with only 15% of participants free of these conditions. These findings demonstrate a discrepancy between reported knowledge and the effective practice of preventive measures, as well as a relationship with the presence of oral diseases. It is concluded that, to reduce the incidence of halitosis and associated pathologies, it is necessary to implement educational and preventive strategies that integrate information, motivation, and clinical follow-up.
