Infectious Markers in Donors in the Blood Bank of the Inmaculada Concepción District Hospital of Caaguazú, 2023
Main Article Content
Abstract
Blood transfusion and its components are the most widely used treatment for correcting acute blood loss and chronic anemia. In all cases, blood transfusion is possible thanks to a unit of donated human blood. The donor is the first link that determines the effectiveness of this process. While controversial due to potential side effects, the donor is crucial as no other treatment can replace it. Detecting infectious markers in donation candidates at blood banks is vital for ensuring the safety of blood transfusions. This study aims to analyze the variability of infectious markers in donors at the blood bank of the Inmaculada Concepción District Hospital in Caaguazú during the year 2023. A quantitative approach was employed, with a descriptive, retrospective, and cross-sectional level of knowledge.
The study included 117 donors with positive serologies for infectious markers. Of these, 63.2% were male and 36.8% female. The infectious marker with the highest reactivity was syphilis at 66.7%, followed by hepatitis B at 16.2%, Chagas disease at 8.5%, hepatitis C at 6%, and human T-lymphotropic virus types I and II at 1.8%. The data obtained in this study provide valuable information on the distribution of infectious markers and the sociodemographic characteristics of blood donors at the Inmaculada Concepción District Hospital in Caaguazú in 2023. These findings can be useful for improving public health strategies, designing prevention programs, and managing blood safety.
